Three Intelligences on My Commute

Key Points

  • The narrator’s commute employed three intelligences: human driving to start, AI‑controlled self‑driving on the highway, and augmented‑intelligence driver‑assist features for lane changes and collision warnings.
  • Artificial intelligence is defined as machines performing tasks that normally require human reasoning, effectively replacing humans for those functions, whereas augmented intelligence pairs machines with humans to enhance each other’s capabilities.
  • A strengths matrix highlights that machines excel at ingesting massive data quickly, handling repetitive tasks with high accuracy, and thus are ideal for pure AI solutions.
  • Humans, by contrast, are superior at generalizing concepts, generating creative ideas, solving novel problems, and applying emotional intelligence, making augmented approaches preferable for tasks requiring judgment and innovation.
  • Choosing the best intelligence type depends on the problem: use AI for data‑intensive, repetitive work, and augmented intelligence when human insight, creativity, or emotional nuance is essential.

0:00i want to share with you the story of 0:03how i got to work today i submit to you 0:06that my drive from my home to my office 0:09used three forms of 0:11intelligence the first intelligence 0:14was human 0:16intelligence 0:20the intelligence there was the 0:22intelligence done i needed to operate 0:24the vehicle to turn the steering wheel 0:26to check my mirrors 0:28the second form of intelligence was 0:31artificial 0:34intelligence 0:38once i got on the highway i turned on 0:42the self-driving feature in my car 0:45fancy 0:46now the car stayed in its own lane kept 0:48an appropriate distance from the vehicle 0:50in front and maintained a proper speed 0:53no input from me at all 0:56when i got off of the highway i used a 0:59third form of intelligence augmented 1:03intelligence 1:07augmented intelligence well that took 1:09the form of all the driver assist 1:12features in the vehicle things like 1:13collision detection to alert me if i got 1:16too close to the car in front and blind 1:18spot avoidance to tell me if there was a 1:20vehicle alongside me as i changed lanes 1:24artificial intelligence well that is the 1:27ability 1:28for machines to perform tasks that 1:30normally require human intelligence such 1:33as reasoning 1:34natural communication and problem 1:35solving 1:37it 1:37basically replaces the need for a human 1:40so 1:41computers 1:43are doing the work 1:45us humans 1:47not really needed 1:52and the artificial intelligence performs 1:54certain tasks and makes decisions and 1:57it's incorporated into so many systems 1:59today 2:00now contrast that with augmented 2:03intelligence 2:04now this is where you have machines 2:09and you have humans 2:12both working together 2:17and they're doing so to enhance each 2:20other's efforts when completing tasks 2:22augmented intelligence systems augment 2:25our human abilities things like screen 2:28readers for the blind voice driven 2:30navigation or my 2:32in-car collision avoidance system 2:33they're all examples of augmented 2:35intelligence at work they act on our 2:38behalf in the physical world but in a 2:40way that complements our own 2:42capabilities 2:44so 2:45artificial 2:46or augmented 2:48which 2:49form of intelligence will give us the 2:52best results for a given problem well to 2:54answer that let's create a strengths 2:58matrix 2:59so machines 3:03versus humans 3:10now one thing machines are great at is 3:14ingesting large amounts of data 3:22they can take in more data at a faster 3:26rate than any human could and they also 3:29don't get tired so they can just keep 3:30going and going ingesting that data as 3:32they go 3:33machines are especially good at things 3:36like repetitive tasks 3:42and to do so in a way that is reliably 3:45accurate 3:49unlike my spelling of repetitive 3:52so if you need to quickly analyze a lot 3:55of data or do something over and over 3:57again with no margin for error and then 4:00specifically artificial intelligence is 4:02really your best bet 4:04now on the other hand us humans well we 4:08have a few advantages too 4:10we're very good at generalizing 4:12information 4:17we can take a single piece of data and 4:19understand that the concept that it 4:22represents we're also very good at 4:24creativity 4:30we can come up with ideas we can solve 4:33problems and communicate our findings in 4:35a way that well machines just can't and 4:38we have emotional intelligence too 4:43and that's a big benefit where we can 4:45understand the reactions of others and 4:48it's critical for tasks like customer 4:50service or caregiving 4:53now augmented intelligence is really a 4:55sweet spot that combines all of these 4:57human strengths with a bit of a helping 5:00hand from our machine counterparts by 5:03using ai to help us see and understand 5:05the world in new ways we are able to do 5:07things that would be impossible for us 5:09humans on our own so 5:12which form of intelligence is best 5:14the answer is both and that's why i love 5:17augmented intelligence it's how humans 5:19will continue to thrive and lead in the 5:21world 5:22and get me to work safely 5:27if you have any questions please drop us 5:29a line below and if you want to see more 5:31videos like this in the future please 5:33like and subscribe 5:35thanks for watching
