Pickle: AI Avatar for Remote Meetings

Key Points

  • Pickle launches a practical AI‑avatar solution that lets users join Zoom calls with a photorealistic, lip‑synced avatar while they remain elsewhere, using their own live audio.
  • By limiting its scope to avatar rendering and live audio lip‑sync—ignoring accent translation, full speech‑to‑text, or AI‑generated dialogue—Pickle avoids the complex, multi‑dimensional challenges that have stalled similar projects.
  • This narrow focus allowed the company to ship quickly and target a clear pain point: maintaining a professional, “office‑present” appearance for remote workers who may be driving, caring for children, or otherwise multitasking.
  • Early interest suggests many remote workers will adopt the tool to convey consistent presence, even though broader adoption and scalability (e.g., avatar cloning) may still need further development.

0:00so pickle just released and it's a 0:02phenomenal example of how to Think 0:05Through complex problems in the age of 0:07AI pickle is a tool that you can use to 0:12join a zoom conversation as if you are 0:15there at the desk live but it's not live 0:20it's an AI Avatar and you're like well 0:21there's lots of people working on that 0:23that may be true but the way pickle has 0:26done it has enabled them to get to 0:27Market faster and that's what I love 0:29about this 0:30so if you think about the problem of 0:32people being in meetings you think well 0:35we have to solve for the way people look 0:37the way people talk the limp syncing the 0:39llm needs to actually generate the 0:41content the llm needs to understand 0:42what's being said this gets very 0:44complicated then you get into voice you 0:46get into accent it's a really hard 0:49problem and it has a lot of dimensions 0:50and that's why we don't have a full 0:53solution I mean you could also just not 0:55have the meeting I'm a big fan of 0:57that okay the 1:00reason why pickle is in Market is 1:02because pickle has only taken a part of 1:05that whole problem set and delivered it 1:08and that's what enabled them to get to 1:09Market faster so all pickle does is it 1:13takes live audio that you produce you 1:15still have to be in the meeting listen 1:17to it and talk back and it produces an 1:21AI Avatar riew that's photorealistic in 1:24a professional location and it lip syncs 1:27you live that's it 1:30it took everything else away like it 1:32doesn't have to worry about accent 1:33because you produce the voice it doesn't 1:35have to worry about the llm really 1:38understanding what's being said because 1:39again you're the one in the 1:40meeting and that choice has enabled them 1:43to solve one of the most persistent 1:45issues in a busy remote work or partial 1:49remote work context which is that people 1:51are going about their lives they're 1:53working but they may be in different 1:55contexts so for example if you're 1:58driving in the car normally you would go 2:00audio on if you choose to 2:03participate but in this situation you 2:06are able to just plug your own audio in 2:10listen and the camera that you use is a 2:14zoom camera tied to the pickle app and 2:16it just shows an AI Avatar view that 2:20they've built lip syncing to your audio 2:22so you could be driving and 2:23participating in the zoom meeting you 2:25could be holding the baby and 2:26participating in the zoom meeting and 2:28this is a really tangible paino I can't 2:31count the number of times when it's been 2:33a little bit odd because people are out 2:35doing things this and that and they're 2:38not actually at the desk in a way that 2:42enables them to 2:44participate but their audio is there 2:46they're they're present mentally and so 2:48I look is this perfect is everybody 2:50going to use this enough people are 2:53using it that they're uh clone 2:54production is delayed so I think they're 2:55getting some interest I suspect more 2:58than you think will sign up for this and 3:00the reason why is that if you think 3:01about the pain 3:03point the the biggest pain Point 3:05actually is being able to consistently 3:09convey an office-like impression and 3:11that's what pickle is going after it's a 3:14much different paino if you want to say 3:18your time spent in meetings is a problem 3:21everyone would agree with that but very 3:24few people are going to trust an AI to 3:26just bite off and solve that without 3:28proof like literally me not being in the 3:30meeting I have to trust the AI to 3:32summarize correctly I have to trust the 3:34AI to be me that's an extremely high bar 3:38but just trusting the AI to look like it 3:40it can sit in an office chair and lip 3:42sync while I walk around the house doing 3:44dishes and talk much lower bar much much 3:48more 3:49easy so I and the funny thing is I don't 3:55think I don't think people are going to 3:58notice when this is used like I have 4:00seen the demo it takes too long to 4:03create the Clone so like it dropped 4:05today I haven't got a clone yet but I 4:07have seen the demo 4:10and I don't think people are going to 4:13notice and the funny thing is that means 4:15that people are not going to have like a 4:17virality factor it will have a whisper 4:18factor for spreading but it won't have a 4:20virality factor because there won't be a 4:21little logo because by definition you 4:23don't want people to know you use this 4:26which is going to make their product 4:27adoption really interesting so so I 4:30think they've solved one of the most 4:31relevant pain points in the entire sort 4:34of meeting problem 4:36space and I think they've solved it well 4:38enough that your colleagues are going to 4:40start using it and I think the only way 4:43you're going to know is that the app has 4:46people just squarely facing the camera 4:48and making eye contact and I don't know 4:49about you but I like look off into the 4:51distance I look off over here like I'm 4:53much more Dynamic when I'm in a meeting 4:56and I think that piece is going to stand 4:58out over time but but it's a good idea I 5:01think a lot of people are going to use 5:03it and I am really really curious to see 5:07other kinds of products in these problem 5:09spaces that choose something that is 5:10painful to Consumers but relatively easy 5:13for AI and that go after that if you're 5:16interested in getting your lifelike AI 5:18clone uh you can go to get pickle. aai 5:22and no this is not an endorsement of any 5:23kind this is just me thinking this is a 5:25really really interesting problem space 5:28so there you go check out getp pickle. 5:31and let me know what you think
