OpenAI O1 Pro Pricing Strategy

Key Points

  • OpenAI launched O1 and the higher‑tier O1 Pro (priced at $200 per month) as part of a “12 Days of Christmas” rollout, positioning Pro for advanced coding, science, and mathematics tasks.
  • O1 Pro is marketed toward PhD‑level researchers and expert developers who need superior performance, while the regular O1 model remains available in the $20‑per‑month plans.
  • The steep $200 price reflects OpenAI’s need to monetize its most advanced model as a “trailing‑edge indicator” while it operates with negative cash flow and pushes toward super‑intelligence.
  • Recent disclosures from OpenAI’s leadership show the company generating about $4.3 billion in ARR with roughly 188 million paying users (including ~1 million on the business tier), creating pressure to raise subscription prices.
  • The community is expected to debate whether O1 Pro already achieves general intelligence, but regardless it signals OpenAI’s strategy to fund the next generation of models.

0:00I cannot keep up with the news today 0:01open aai has dropped 01 they have 0:03dropped 01 Pro they have a 12 Days of 0:06Christmas theme so more is coming and I 0:08was just about to make a post on the 0:10strategy that open AI is using for 0:12pricing so here's what we're going to do 0:13we're going to talk briefly about 01 and 0:1501 Pro and what what they are and then 0:17we're going to talk about the pricing 0:19strategy because it's highly relevant 0:20because guess what 01 Pro is $200 a 0:24month pull out your 0:27pocketbooks so why did they release them 0:29together what are they good for both 01 0:32and 01 Pro look like from the tests that 0:35they like they are much better at coding 0:37and Science and 0:39Mathematics this is the direction that 0:41openai has been hinting they're going at 0:43in 2025 this absolutely validates that 0:47now you might wonder what is the 0:48difference between 01 which is available 0:50in the 20 Buck plans and 01 Pro which is 0:53going to cost $200 a month like you can 0:56go play with o1 now you can go play with 0:58it in the plus plan well the difference 1:01seems to be if you are a PhD researcher 1:05in science or mathematics or potentially 1:07someone who needs expert level code 1:09analysis you would be willing to pay 200 1:13bucks a month for somewhat better 1:16performance versus even 1:1801 and 01 from the testing looks 1:20substantially better from 01 preview so 1:24I'm going to link the full paper on the 1:25test results dive in play with it let me 1:28know what you think I'm sure a dozen 1:30video bloggers are right now making 1:32posts on the differences between 01 Pro 1:35and 01 we will know within 24 hours what 1:37what the internet 1:39thinks but let's get to the unit 1:41economics why did they price it at 1:45$200 the reason has to do with the game 1:48they're playing so as a model maker open 1:51AI is inherently negative cash flow they 1:54cannot 1:56spend any less than they are currently 1:59spending and hope to reach their 2:00ultimate goal of reaching super 2:02intelligence first in fact they should 2:05probably be spending 2:07more and yet their subscriptions their 2:11cash flow is all based on what they 2:14currently have in Market which is not 2:16super intelligence it's not even general 2:18intelligence it's a large language model 2:21it's extremely good they keep getting 2:22better we're going to have debates in 2:24the next few days on whether 01 Pro 2:27reaches general intelligence I guarantee 2:29it 2:30but 2:31regardless if it's available and you're 2:34paying for it you are paying for a 2:36trailing Edge indicator in their 2:38strategy they've already shipped it they 2:40have to monetize that piece of 2:42intelligence and somehow invest 10x more 2:45100x more in what's coming inherently 2:47their business model is negative cash 2:49flow and they are only charging people 2:5220 bucks a month and they reveal like 2:54the CFO and Sam both gave interesting 2:56sort of interviews in the last couple 2:58weeks and they revealed some fundamental 2:59numbers numbers that suggest to me they 3:01have to raise prices which is why I'm 3:02not surprised by 200 bucks a 3:04month they are running at$ 4.3 billion 3:08in ARR right now roughly 188 million 3:11paying users 1 million on the business 3:13plan which is like 60 bucks a month and 3:17at the end of the day that does not add 3:20up to anywhere close to what they need 3:22for their goals even with the gigantic 3:24like six billion and change or whatever 3:26that they raised from Venture Capital 3:28it's not close they need more and the 3:32only way that they can get more is to 3:35release models that allow them to charge 3:38more which is why I argued literally in 3:40a video an hour before this this whole 3:42thing released that Sam mman had a 3:45strategic imperative to release fast lo 3:47and behold he released 3:49fast and they must charge 200 bucks a 3:54month because they need iPhone level 3:55unit economics to pay for what they're 3:58building at the end of the day 4:00an iPhone costs people close to 200 4:02bucks a month it just gets hidden in a 4:03phone plan now fancy iPhones consumers 4:07have choice they can go down Market I 4:09know all of that but just from a rough 4:12unit of value perspective 200 bucks is 4:14close to an iPhone payment it's close to 4:16a car plan it is not what you pay for 4:19software subscriptions and so they are 4:21breaking the 4:22category and they are suggesting 4:24implicitly that this will replace so 4:26much human labor for the researcher or 4:29for for the entrepreneur that it is 4:32worth that price 4:34point 4:37so they have to be betting on 4:41essentially tinder's business model 4:43tinder's business model is that like 1% 4:45of users are going to pay essentially 4:47anything for a date and so they just 4:49have prices that just keep stacking and 4:51going higher and higher and chat GPT 4:54knows that only like 1% of their users 4:56pay 60 Buck bucks now for the business 4:59plan less than that will pay 200 bucks 5:01even for a better 5:02model but they can charge those guys 5:05kind of anything they want right like 5:06the what is the entrepreneur going to 5:08pay for a model that allows him to delay 5:10hiring by six months or a year a whole 5:13lot more than 200 bucks a month if he 5:15has to and so there's a lot of 5:17elasticity in that upper sliver of their 5:20user base and I think that's part of 5:22their plan to monetize but they also if 5:26they want iPhone level cash flow do need 5:28to figure out how to get ordinary users 5:31who either are not paying on the free 5:33plan or are paying 20 bucks a month to 5:36convert over to this expensive plan on 5:39Moss right like as a bulk segment no one 5:44has figured that out yet they're not 5:45even trying with this release but I 5:47argue that their cash flow demands Apple 5:51level Apple level Revenue they are 5:54burning too much cash not to have it 5:56they need those kinds of unit economics 5:59to justify F 01 is out 0 Pro is out you 6:02have heard my little note on pricing and 6:05strategy let me know what you think of 6:07the new models
