OpenAI Launches Sora 2 Social App

Key Points

  • OpenAI’s new Sora 2 app is a standalone social‑media platform built around short AI‑generated videos (up to ~16 seconds) that lets users insert themselves as cameos and share them with friends.
  • The launch is a deliberate move to compete directly with Meta, positioning OpenAI as a responsible AI player while avoiding the “AI‑slop” stigma that has plagued other platforms.
  • By focusing the experience on personal, friend‑centric interactions, OpenAI aims to demonstrate a positive, constructive use of generative AI and reinforce its brand as a “good‑guy” in the AI ecosystem.
  • Even if Sora 2 doesn’t become a dominant network, its existence serves as a proof‑point that AI can enhance social engagement responsibly, helping OpenAI counter criticism and shape public perception.
  • The app’s viral mechanic—users dubbing themselves into AI videos—acts as both a fun feature and a “training wheel” for broader AI adoption among everyday users.

0:00Sora 2. What is it and why is OpenAI 0:02launching it as a separate standalone 0:05social media app? I'm going to break 0:07down the entire strategy and why OpenAI 0:10specific product choices tell you about 0:13where the company is going. Let's get 0:15into it. First, it has taken them a long 0:18time to get video and images right. They 0:21did not release this back when they did 0:23the special splashy Sora 1 launch that 0:26had a very nice page showing you 0:28potential Sora videos and then much more 0:30mixed results a few months later when 0:32Sora 1 actually released. They feel 0:35better about this product. It's got 0:37longer video images. I think it's up to 0:4016 seconds now. They're figuring out 0:42some of the sound pieces and critically 0:45they've put clearly a ton of thought 0:47into what kind of social network they 0:50want this to be. And yes, let's just say 0:53it out loud, it is a social network. 0:55Chat GPT is launching a social network 0:58as a standalone app. This is a direct 1:00shot across the bow at Meta and Zuck. 1:04And they mean it. They intend to go 1:06after the social network phenomenon for 1:10multiple reasons which I'm going to get 1:11into. But first, let's talk through the 1:14product itself. 1:16This product is intended to be old style 1:19Facebook, old style Instagram. It is 1:22about you and your friends. And that is 1:25what they are aiming for. And the reason 1:28why is pretty simple. They are very very 1:31sensitive to the accusation that AI is 1:34going to produce slop on the internet. 1:37They don't want to have their brand 1:39associated with the idea of AI slop. 1:41They have seen Meta's terrible PR 1:44experience with AI girlfriends and 1:46boyfriends with AI chat sort of 1:49assistance with AI produced. I think 1:52there was a nonprofit scam where AI was 1:55like bragging about donating and helping 1:57others last year. They've seen all of 1:59those stories. They've seen this broad 2:02and pervasive impression that people 2:05have that AI is wrecking social media. 2:08And they want two things out of that. 2:10One, they want to make sure that they 2:13are perceived as the good guys. And two, 2:16they want to make sure that they can 2:19show a path for AI being used 2:22responsibly. And so as much as I think 2:24they're excited about Sora launching, 2:26I'm sure the team worked really hard on 2:27it. From a strategic perspective, 2:30even if Sora doesn't succeed, but it 2:32shows a way toward a more constructive 2:34use of AI, that is still a base hit from 2:37their perspective. That is still a win 2:39because they can show that AI can be 2:41part of the solution, which chat, GPT, 2:44and OpenAI desperately need right now. 2:47So that is why they have centered this 2:50app around you and your friends. That is 2:52why the viral feature of this app is you 2:54insert yourself as a cameo into the AI 2:57video and show your friends and cast 2:58yourselves back and forth. It is 3:00designed for fun, encouraging, positive 3:04interaction between friends that cannot 3:08help but be powered by AI. You can't put 3:10yourself into videos and send them back 3:12and forth and have fun unless you're 3:14using AI. And so it is also inherently a 3:18set of training wheels for people who 3:20are going to be using AI to be creative 3:22in new ways. In some ways, I think the 3:25network that we don't talk about that 3:26should be most worried is Snap because 3:29Snap is designed for those kinds of 3:31ephemeral interactions back and forth 3:33between friends. And it's interesting to 3:35see that that is the direction that 3:38OpenAI has chosen to go rather than more 3:40of the content network like Tik Tok. We 3:43will see. It is early days yet. I 3:45remember when threads released and then 3:47the long fallout from threads. This is 3:50day one for Sora 2. We will see where it 3:52ends up. Before we go further though, 3:55we've talked about sort of their core 3:57friend oriented product strategy. I want 4:00to talk about the larger product 4:02strategy. Why is OpenAI getting into the 4:06social network business at all? It is 4:08not just because they need AI to be 4:10perceived positively. 4:13It is also 4:15because they have a billion people and 4:19they are a consumer application and one 4:22of the inevitable forms of business on 4:24the internet for consumer applications 4:27is attention to ads. I've been talking a 4:31lot about OpenAI monetizing ads and we 4:35have seen them do three things that 4:37argue for ads maybe four in the last 4:41week. One is starting to hire a head of 4:43monetization and ads. That's pretty 4:44transparent. Two is launching Pulse for 4:47pro users where they actually show you 4:48cards. You can see sponsored cards so 4:51easily there, guys. It's like falling 4:53over. And then three, launching Sora 2. 4:56Again, a super easy platform for ads. 5:00Now, the fourth thing, if you sort of 5:02want to get into the full purchase 5:04funnel, they are working with Etsy and 5:06Shopify on checkout within chat GPT. And 5:08so, now they would own the whole funnel, 5:09right? Well, all of this helps to answer 5:13the question for all of us about how 5:16they are thinking about ads and how they 5:18are thinking about maintaining the 5:20perceived integrity of the system when 5:23you get answers from chat GPT. Because 5:25one of the persistent concerns I've seen 5:27in my DMs that I've also had is how do 5:30you handle the integrity of the system 5:32if someone can buy an answer on chat GPT 5:35that feels like it will rot the product 5:38experience from within and it feels like 5:41something that chat GPT is going to be 5:42self-aware enough to avoid. This may be 5:45how they may be choosing to launch new 5:48surfaces off their existing install base 5:51in order to provide themselves ad paint 5:55spots that don't touch the core chat GPT 5:58experience. Like you get an ad in pulse, 5:59you get an ad on Sora 2, they didn't 6:01touch chat GPT. You still think of Chad 6:03GPT as trustworthy, right? 6:06I'm not saying that's the whole 6:07solution. They may indeed get to a point 6:09where they start to put ads in Chad GPT 6:11itself. My bet is they're going to use 6:13some of these other surfaces initially 6:16because they're much much lower stakes. 6:18They're newer. 6:20But we come back around to the 6:21imperative of monetization. We come back 6:23around to the idea that this is a 6:24billion user company or soon will be. 6:28This would be the only billion user 6:30company that is not an ad network if it 6:32didn't do ads. This would be the only 6:35billion user network that is not a 6:36social network if it didn't do social. 6:39It is sort of like centers of gravity on 6:42the internet. When you get to a certain 6:43scale, you head to ads and you head to a 6:47social network. It's just what you do. 6:49It's how you make money. You make money 6:51off relationships and attention. And so 6:53that is why when people started to write 6:55me and say, "Why on earth is chat GPT 6:57doing this? I thought they were a chat 6:58product." I think we need to rethink 7:01what they are. They are not a chat 7:03product per se. They're an intelligence 7:05company that is in the business of 7:07providing delightful experiences at 7:10scale driven by intelligence. 7:13So think that one through and suddenly 7:15the social network makes sense, pulse 7:17makes sense, checkout makes sense. These 7:19all make sense. Now is there an 7:21enterprise arm? Is there an R&D arm? 7:23Absolutely. And those help with 7:25profitability and the P&L of the 7:27business. But the beating heart of the 7:31company is the billion user base. If you 7:34don't keep that healthy, you're not a 7:37big brand. And if you're not a big 7:38brand, you are indirectly damaging your 7:41enterprise and your R&D plays as well. 7:44Part of why enterprise has chat GPT on 7:48the table is because everyone has heard 7:50of it. So you need that popular support 7:52even on the B2B side. 7:55So I think that's some of what is going 7:57on strategically here. That's why I 7:59wasn't surprised when Sora 2 launched. I 8:02think they also launched preemptively 8:05before the holidays. They wanted the 8:07attention. They wanted the buildup to 8:10Black Friday, Cyber Monday. They wanted 8:11the Q4. They wanted the tiein to 8:13monetization. I don't know what that 8:15means for ads this fourth quarter. But I 8:19think they at least want the telemetry. 8:21They want the metrics of how people 8:22interact with it. And they want to start 8:23to build against it. 8:25They also want to steal a march on 8:28Google, Snap, and Meta because all of 8:31those will now be looking at how they 8:34can start to get into the action on the 8:36social side too. Meta is actively 8:38building that way and has been roundly 8:40criticized by most people. I described 8:42that earlier in this video. Google 8:43hasn't launched anything in the social 8:45and network space for a very long time 8:47and they are trying to maintain 8:49attention by leaning into Nano Banana 8:52everywhere you can look. Like they have 8:54ads up everywhere. They have ads on TV. 8:55They have ads on Tik Tok. They have ads 8:57on other channels across the internet. 8:58They're leaning in with lovable on this 9:00build week. They want you thinking of 9:03Nano Banana a lot right now because they 9:06don't want you distracted by what Sora 9:08can do, right? Like for them, this is a 9:10little bit of a defensive play where 9:12they need to lean in on the cool thing 9:13they have so you don't get distracted by 9:15the cool thing OpenAI has. And we'll see 9:18what Snap does. My perception is this is 9:20a direct threat to Snap, but it's only a 9:23direct threat to Snap if people start to 9:24adopt it and use it and find it 9:26delightful. And I think that is always 9:28the question. That is the magic that 9:30comes with social networks. You get a 9:33particular ecosystem and culture very 9:35very rapidly. And that is why they are 9:37making it invite only is because they 9:39want to seed the ecosystem with the kind 9:41of creators that will help them to build 9:44a culture that will be attractive to 9:47build a long-term following and 9:50long-term positive experience for 9:51people. I suspect they especially want 9:55to develop a reputation as a safe and 9:58positive place versus some of the brand 10:01reputation stuff you see with other 10:03major social networks. So we will see. 10:06It is day one for Sora 2. But that is 10:09why OpenAI is thinking about that. This 10:11is the intelligence company 10:13and the intelligence company that has a 10:16billion users. They are figuring out how 10:19to leverage intelligence every way they 10:21can to provide delightful experiences 10:23for those users. 10:25And that's a very different strategic 10:27position from every other sort of model 10:29maker in the space. What do you think? 10:31What are they up to with Sora 2? Have 10:32you tried Sor 2? Do you have invite 10:34codes for Sor 2? I'm sure the people in 10:35the in the comments will be very excited 10:37about that. Cheers.
