OpenAI Fundraising, LinkedIn AI Scraping, Claude Mini Performance

Key Points

  • OpenAI is demanding $250 million minimum checks from venture‑capital investors for its next fundraising round, hinting at a potentially massive raise that could approach $100 billion.
  • LinkedIn has added a hidden “generative AI data collection” toggle that defaults to on, allowing the platform to scrape users’ professional content for AI training without explicit consent.
  • The lack of clear consent for large‑scale data harvesting raises serious privacy and accountability concerns, especially in the U.S., where users must actively opt‑out to protect their data.
  • Anthropic’s Claude 1 mini can match the performance of the larger Claude 1 preview when given extra processing time, showing that latency can offset smaller model size in many use cases.

0:00three big pieces of news and a note on 0:01how to get a discount on my AI Maven 0:04course news number one open AI is able 0:08to dictate any terms they want to get 0:10people to invest in them and maybe you 0:11and I aren't surprised but even I was a 0:13little bit surprised by how high those 0:15terms are for Venture capitalists they 0:17are saying if you are not willing to 0:19write $250 million checks you shouldn't 0:22be talking to them their next 0:24fundraising round will have at a minimum 0:26a quarter of a billion dollar checks in 0:28the round which shows how big that round 0:31is going to be they haven't announced 0:32the final size of it they're just 0:33starting the Rays but I would 0:35confidently expect it to be maybe close 0:38to hundred billion dollar it's going to 0:40be a big 0:41raise number 0:43two LinkedIn has decided to model 0:49non-consensual generative AI scraping 0:52they're not asking for your consent they 0:54are sticking a new setting inside their 0:57menu that says generative AI data 1:00collection preference or something like 1:02that I found it last night and they're 1:04defaulting it to on without telling you 1:08and so they're taking the largest 1:10private professional data pool in the 1:11world where like you and I are our 1:13professional selves and we're writing 1:14our content and they're saying all of 1:16that is ours to collect and train our 1:18model on but we don't have to tell you 1:20that we don't have to ask for your 1:21consent we can just do it now my 1:24understanding is because of gdpr folks 1:27in the EU don't have to worry about this 1:29but in the the US I would go into your 1:32settings and I would have a look and 1:33make sure you are choosing intentionally 1:35whether to share that data or not it's 1:38not acceptable for generative AI 1:40companies not to explicitly ask for 1:42consent when they make a change that big 1:45and I think it's important that we model 1:46a degree of expectation of 1:49accountability that that's not 1:51acceptable it's not okay you need to ask 1:54if you're going to collect people's data 1:55for the purpose of training an llm it's 1:56a norm that we need to establish 2:01finally I want to call out one of the 2:02interesting reasons why 01 mini is 2:05performing as well as 01 preview it 2:08turns out when you let 01 mini think for 2:10a little bit it does just as well almost 2:13as 01 2:14preview in other words extra time when 2:18you send in an utterance for it to 2:21respond 2:22to is just as good as extra size on the 2:27model because 01 Min is a smaller model 2:29and for most of us for most of llm 2:32History our understanding has been 2:34certainly my understanding has been that 2:35if it's smaller it's generally not as 2:37good now you can argue it's a smaller 2:39model but it's specifically tuned and is 2:40better at this use case absolutely bu 2:43that but this is a general model and 2:46it's still using the thinking time to 2:49perform almost as well as 0 and preview 2:51and you can see that in the chatbot 2:53Arena uh scores you have two big scores 2:55that are ahead of everybody else right 2:57now they're like up here in the uh past 2:591300 1350s and then down here in the 3:021200s is every other model on the planet 3:04including Chad GPT 3:0840 and 01 mini is performing that well 3:11because it's taking a little bit more 3:13time to think and that's called log 3:16linear Computing which is a mouthful to 3:19say but basically amounts to the idea 3:21that you can actually get those gains in 3:23intelligence from a larger model by 3:25giving the model time to respond I'll be 3:29talking more about this in my lightning 3:31lesson which is what I wanted to call 3:32out it's one of the key differences with 3:34the 01 models it's something we need to 3:35think about as far as the kinds of 3:37problems we give models and what we 3:38expect from 3:40them and uh you can sign up for it I'll 3:43throw a link down below if you want to 3:45Discount early also sign up for the wait 3:48list the discount code is dropping on 3:49Monday September 23rd and you want to be 3:53there it's a decent discount code for my 3:55mavin course so to recap lightning 3:57lesson will cover 01 it's free 30 4:00minutes sign up and the wait list which 4:04is a nice discount right now on my Maven 4:06course is dropping on September 23rd and 4:10the reason why you might want to jump on 4:12that is because I've had a ton of 4:13interest I'm already up to almost 50 4:15signups for the course uh I I want to 4:17make sure I have like appropriate 4:18instruction for everyone and so I 4:20actually don't know how big I can get 4:22the course before I have to cut it off 4:24so if you're interested in the course 4:26you should hop in so that I can be sure 4:28that I can 4:30provide you the kinds of instruction on 4:32AI that that you want that I love to 4:35give and that will help you accelerate 4:37your career because that's ultimate 4:38ultimately what this is all about is how 4:40can you accelerate your career
