OpenAI Debuts Deep Research, AGI Promise

Key Points

  • Deep Research is a new OpenAI product (not the Google tool) that runs on the full‑size GPT‑3 model, allowing users to pose complex, multi‑hour research questions and receive a 30‑minute web‑sourced paper with accurate citations.
  • Unlike Google’s Deepsearch, OpenAI’s Deep Research delivers higher‑quality results and is initially available on the Pro plan, with plans to become free soon.
  • The product was unveiled at a press conference in Japan, where SoftBank chairman Masayoshi Son brought Sam Altman to discuss a major funding deal separate from the Stargate partnership.
  • During the event, Son announced that OpenAI intends to declare the achievement of artificial general intelligence (AGI) in Japan within two years, a claim Altman accepted.
  • The speakers also revealed plans for a “fork” of OpenAI—a special company to be established in Japan—to pursue the AGI roadmap, raising questions about its future relationship with Microsoft.

0:00okay guys we have to talk about deep 0:02research and we have to talk about that 0:04wild press conference with Sam Alman and 0:06masay Yoshi's son in Japan there is so 0:09much in there that's not getting 0:10reported widely so first deep research 0:12what is it it is not Google's deep 0:15research which seems to just scrape a 0:16bunch of websites pretty quickly and 0:18come back and give you a summary it was 0:20already very good it's not deep seek 0:23which is of course the big model that 0:24has shaken the markets it is a separate 0:28product that openai released currently 0:30on the pro plan although apparently it's 0:32going to go all the way down to free 0:33very shortly and it is the first one to 0:37use the full 03 model this is not 03 0:40mini I feel like so much of my time on 0:43this channel is explaining their names 0:45this is the full 03 and that means that 0:48it is smarter than 03 mini which I 0:50suppose does make 0:51sense and what you do is you ask it a 0:54complicated question maybe you're asking 0:56it about legal cases maybe you're asking 0:58it about uh a scientific question or 1:00mathematics question or a history 1:02question something that would take you a 1:05few hours to dig into and understand you 1:07could ask about the evolution of 1:09Sanskrit for 1:11example and it will go and it will look 1:15very carefully for up to 30 minutes 1:17across everything it can find on the web 1:19and it will come back and it will write 1:21you a full paper with accurate citations 1:24now you might be thinking that that 1:25that's a whole lot like the identically 1:27named product that Google put out and 1:30the basic requirement functionality is 1:33but the results are much higher quality 1:36so yes just like deep research for 1:38Google it goes out and browses the web 1:40it comes back it writes a report it 1:41cites things but the results are much 1:45better I'm going to be putting up a 1:46substack later today that talks about 1:49sort of a side by-side comparison of 1:51what it looks 1:52like now that's deep research it just 1:55came out on the pro tier the press 1:59conference where deep research was 2:01released took place in Japan and there's 2:03a reason for that masay Yoshi son who is 2:07the chairman of soft bank which is a 2:08major funer for tech companies pulled 2:11Sam mman over to Japan because he's 2:13discussing a major funding deal for open 2:16AI separate from Stargate which he's 2:18also involved in and he had some 2:22interesting requirements from Sam which 2:24Sam agreed 2:25to that I think are really fascinating 2:29it shows that 2:30the people involved think that open AI 2:33is close enough to artificial general 2:35intelligence that it's time to make 2:37plans and so right from the stage MAA 2:39Yoshi son said we are going to announce 2:43artificial general intelligence right 2:44back here in Japan in less than two 2:46years and Sam 2:48agreed and so they've picked the place 2:50where they will announce AGI I also do 2:53not know what that will mean for open 2:55ai's relationship with Microsoft I guess 2:57that's for other people to figure out 3:00and then they also shared Sam and masay 3:03Yoshi son also shared that there will be 3:07a special company a sort of a fork of 3:11open AI if you will established in Japan 3:13that will focus specifically on a 3:17special uh model for Japanese company 3:21companies called Crystal and that model 3:24is supposed to independently review all 3:27of your source code and optimize it so 3:31it will be located inside a particular 3:34company's firewall it will review and 3:36update and maintain source code it will 3:38apparently listen to calls it sort of 3:40sounds like they're describing a deity 3:42right which is kind of weird uh but 3:45they're going to sort of sort of build 3:47this thing called Crystal and it will do 3:49all of these magical things inside the 3:51company and apparently that will also 3:52happen very 3:54quickly and that benefit will be 3:56exclusively according to Sam for 4:00Japanese companies initially and I think 4:02that is also Again part of the implicit 4:03deal I think what's going on here is 4:05that SoftBank wants a legacy opportunity 4:09here they want to show they brought AGI 4:11to 4:13Japan and they don't want it to be 4:17something where they just invested in a 4:20US company and the US company was the 4:22one that did you know this amazing 4:26Humanity changing achievement called 4:28artificial general 4:30intelligence by the way my hands coming 4:32in and out because I'm in a weird place 4:34and I have to have an artificial 4:36background 4:37um so it gets weirder like you might 4:41think a model named Crystal that lives 4:43in your company and listens to your 4:45phone calls and does your source code is 4:46weird and it is it it feels a little 4:49strange uh but it gets odder because 4:53then during the press conference uh I am 4:55not making this up masay Yoshi son told 4:59told Sam 5:01Alman that it 5:03was it was 5:05good that I I can't believe I'm going to 5:08say this that it was good that 5:11AI won't be eating people because AI 5:14doesn't need protein as a source of 5:18energy and and he said that right out 5:21loud at the press conference and I just 5:23I I don't even know what to make of that 5:25and I don't think Sam really knew what 5:26to make of that either it's just it's 5:28very strange so 5:31for lack of a better term I think the 5:32traditional term for this would be an 5:34eccentric billionaire has decided to 5:36fund 5:37AI his legacy will be that AI uh 5:41artificial general intelligence is 5:42announced in Japan that apparently is a 5:44done deal now apparently it's less than 5:46two years away and in the meanwhile we 5:49have this tool called Deep research that 5:53frankly does the work of a graduate 5:54intern on the research side of things 5:56now Sam made a big claim Sam said this 5:58does a single digit percentage of the 6:01economically valuable work in the 6:04world I can think of a few times when I 6:09have needed graduate level research work 6:12done but not a ton and I don't know if I 6:15would agrees a single digigit 6:17percentage that doesn't take away from 6:19the value of the tool it's a very 6:21valuable tool if you ask the right 6:23questions and you need the right 6:24questions answered most white color 6:27workers do not need this of research 6:30done for them on a regular basis they 6:33have other things that they have to do 6:35but research at this level is not one of 6:37them for people in science for people in 6:40Academia it is a different thing this is 6:43a big deal so take it for what you like 6:47deep research happened over the weekend 6:49and I didn't even tell you oh my God so 6:53hum's last exam which is I think going 6:55to turn out to be a terrible name for 6:56this thing is an exam That was supposed 6:58to be very hard for AI to crush and we 7:01all know how this goes because this 7:02happened so many times before uh 01 was 7:06at I think around uh 9% and then R1 came 7:10in and now that they've seen the 7:13Humanity's last exam they are sort of 7:15tuning to it and so R1 did a little bit 7:17better but not much like at like 10% or 7:20so 11 um and then 03 mini High came in 7:25and it was at 7:2713% uh and that was on Friday by the way 7:30that was just Friday and then Sunday 7:33came 7:34along uh and I guess it was Monday 7:36morning Japan time and lo and 7:40behold lo and 7:42behold this thing uh deep research it 7:46gets to 7:4925% on Humanity's last exam so in two 7:52days the new high was set from 133% by 7:5603 mini High to 25% 7:59by full 03 using deep research 8:02mode there you go uh I don't know maybe 8:06it'll be 50% by Tuesday we'll see uh 8:08it's a wild time we live in cheers
