Introducing Unified Endpoint Management with MaaS360

Key Points

  • Will Davis introduces a multi‑part series on Unified Endpoint Management (UEM) and explains that UEM is the evolution of Mobile Device Management (MDM), which originally managed only iOS and Android devices.
  • UEM extends management capabilities beyond mobile platforms to include Windows and macOS, consolidating previously separate management domains into a single, unified console.
  • With UEM, devices can be enrolled and managed over‑the‑air, eliminating the need for physical connection or domain‑join procedures for Windows and macOS endpoints.
  • The platform supports both BYOD and corporate‑owned devices, providing data separation to keep personal information off corporate resources and vice versa.
  • UEM offers automated enrollment, policy enforcement (e.g., camera control, password rules) and real‑time compliance reporting, all accessible through a centralized portal.

0:00Hi, my name is Will Davis and I work with MaaS360, an IBM product. 0:05Today we're going to begin talking about  Unified Endpoint Management, or UEM. 0:09This is going to be a first part in a multi-part  series. So definitely hit that "Like" button and 0:14get ready to subscribe to see more content about UEM. 0:18UEM is going to be the next step in the MDM chain. 0:23What's MDM? MDM is going to be your Mobile Device Management. 0:28This is going to give you the ability to manage all of your iOS  devices and your Android devices in one place. 0:40Once you begin to have your iOS and Android devices enrolled and connected to an MDM 0:45or UEM, you're probably going to want to begin to deploy applications, documents, 0:53email settings, containerized, etc., into those devices. 1:00And that is going to be your enterprise mobility management part of the equation here. 1:08But lastly, you notice that we're  only talking about iOS and Android so far when we're talking about MDM. 1:14In your environment, you probably have more than just iOS and Android. 1:17So, we're going to begin to mix in Windows and MacOS. 1:26These are the last two pieces of our equation. 1:30So, we're going to go ahead and add up all the pieces and we're  going to finish with our UEM here at the top. 1:38Up till now, most of the industry has worked with Windows and MacOS kind of in their own little  bubble, 1:43needing to be on the domain to get connected in and really needing to have everything in one place to take care of it all. 1:50With the shift into UEM from separate portals, 1:55you get one unified location to manage everything together. 1:59So you no longer have to worry about coming into the office with all these Windows and MacOS devices 2:04and plugging them in to get them joined up. 2:06You can do it all over the air with UEM. 2:10On top of just going through and enrolling all the devices, 2:13you're going to get all the benefits of an EMM for iOS and Android, 2:17and you get to extend it into your Windows and MacOS world. 2:21You're going to be able to start doing BYOD devices, 2:25corporate owned devices as well, and with those be BYOD devices, 2:29you don't have to worry about that personally identifiable information getting out into your corporate side, 2:35or any of your corporate information getting  into your personal side of those devices. 2:40The UEM is going to offer you options for automated enrollment programs, 2:44so that, turn on the device, it boots right up, and connects right into the UEM. 2:49So, you're not sitting there plugging in a lot of information 2:51and your end users don't have to do a lot of extra work on their own. 2:55Once you go through the enrollment process, 2:57you're going to then be able to deploy restrictions down to the devices. 3:01Are you worried about cameras being used in an inappropriate place? 3:06Go ahead, turn that off. 3:07You're worried about password security? 3:10Passwords can be enforced everywhere as well. 3:13So, on top of restrictions, you're also going to get compliance statuses. 3:18Your compliance status is going to then refer back into your UEM portal, 3:23and let you know if they're doing anything inappropriate that they shouldn't be doing. 3:27Lastly, you're going to be able to integrate your UEM directly with your already established  environments. 3:32All the hard work you already do in Active Directory, 3:35automatically integrated with a couple easy steps. 3:38Get the benefits of it there as well. 3:40Your email, either in the cloud or on-prem, integrated as well. 3:45And all of those GPO rules you've already established for your Windows or MacOS machines 3:51can be imported in and used as well inside of one place. 3:55And lastly, deploying software: you're used to plugging in flash drives 4:00or installing over file shares. 4:02Now you can deploy them over the air. Easy. No extra work needed. 4:07So, going over all this so far, this is just an early, simple, easy look at unified endpoint management and how it's going to affect you. 4:15So, definitely hit that "Like" button, get subscribed, and get  ready for future content in this series.
