IBM's End-to-End Hybrid Cloud Strategy

Key Points

  • IBM’s IDM cloud strategy covers the full spectrum of infrastructure options—from bare‑metal servers and private clouds to public cloud services—enabling clients to choose the exact mix that fits their control, cost, and regulatory needs.
  • The company uniquely positions itself as the only provider that can deliver and integrate public, private, and hybrid cloud environments, helping enterprises transition without abandoning their existing multi‑trillion‑dollar IT investments.
  • Through offerings such as SoftLayer, CMS, Bluemix, and SaaS, IBM can accelerate legacy enterprises to “move at the speed of the cloud” while preserving their current systems.
  • IBM Cloudant adds hybrid data connectivity, allowing new mobile, social, or inventory applications to combine on‑premise “systems of record” with modern “systems of engagement” to create personalized, data‑driven products and services.

0:02when you look at the IDM cloud strategy 0:05we really have a spectrum of 0:06capabilities because we can support 0:08clients that want to do many things some 0:10clients want to have bare metal they 0:12want to take their application their 0:14environment they want to run it on bare 0:16metal and have total control and really 0:18what they're looking for is they're just 0:19looking for the infrastructure that we 0:21can provide them other clients they want 0:23to run on the public cloud and they want 0:25all of the economics that come along 0:26with running on the public cloud instead 0:29of them having to build and buy all of 0:31the infrastructure that they need to run 0:34their business there are other clients 0:36that want to connect and the notion of 0:38hybrid comes in I've got a new mobile 0:40application and I want to connect my 0:42mobile application to my back end 0:44transaction system maybe I want data 0:46from my inventory system maybe I want 0:48access to my bank account or to be able 0:50to do a banking transaction and then 0:52there's other clients that want to build 0:54private clouds they understand the 0:55inherent efficiency of building a 0:57private cloud but maybe for regulatory 0:59reasons or for data locality sovereignty 1:02reasons they have to have the data in 1:04their data center but they want to be 1:05able to run a private cloud we're really 1:08the only provider that provides 1:09everything from the public all the way 1:11to the private and we can pull it 1:13together in ways that others cannot and 1:16we can help clients bridge that 1:18transformation and for the enterprise 1:20they don't have the ability to start 1:22over again they have to integrate with 1:24the trillions of dollars of investments 1:26that they've made in their IT systems 1:28but we want to enable them to move 1:30forward and move forward at the speed of 1:32the cloud and we're well positioned to 1:35be able to provide that through 1:36softlayer CMS bluemix all the way up 1:40through our software as a service so we 1:42really do have the broadest set of 1:44capability in the market 1:46when you think about IBM Cloudant 1:48there's a couple advantages that we can 1:50bring for the enterprise and one of them 1:52is at the hybrid nature because you know 1:54whether you're building an application 1:56is going out in mobile or you're trying 1:59to build the next generation of 2:00inventory management system you really 2:03want to be able to connect the data the 2:05business process is all your business 2:07logic that you've got in your 2:08traditional systems or what we call 2:10systems of record to your new systems of 2:12engagement no systems of engagement of 2:15things like mobile and all of the social 2:17you want to be able to take all of that 2:19social information that's out there 2:20combine it with the data that you have 2:22in premise and really come up with maybe 2:25a new way or new approach or a new 2:28product or service that you want to 2:29bring to the market as an example 2:31Millennials love the fact that you can 2:34mark it to me as an individual you know 2:36what I like you look at my social data 2:38and you say wow I really like this 2:40product or service and here's an offer 2:42for that product or service that's 2:44really getting to be a personalized 2:45experience as a consumer and all that's 2:48being enabled by social by mobile and by 2:52the cloud earlier this year we formed a 2:55cloud unit and the reason we put all of 2:58these pieces together and put a team 3:00together we have to move with speed the 3:02world is moving very very quickly and 3:04we're in what I call the second phase of 3:07the cloud and the second phase of the 3:09cloud is all around the use of data and 3:11analytics and really around business 3:14transformation how do i transform the 3:16processes that drive my business how do 3:18i transform the processes that my end 3:21user whether it be an employee or a 3:23consumer or a client is going to use we 3:27really do have a great understanding of 3:29what is the next generation of the cloud 3:32and we are going to have to move with 3:34speed there's a lot of innovation that's 3:36going on out there some of it will come 3:38from IBM some of it will come from the 3:40market and our ability to pull it all 3:42together and help clients is going to be 3:44a huge advantage so if I was to say 3:46there's one thing we've got to do well 3:48we've got to execute on our strategy and 3:51do it with extreme speed 3:53I think the cloud is bringing a set of 3:56capabilities that enables everyone and 3:59anyone to play I have more access now to 4:02people around the world think about our 4:04access through our social networks I 4:06have more access to data than I ever 4:09have before I've got data not only the 4:12company's gather but things like Twitter 4:14and the weather channel I have more data 4:17that i can analyze than ever before and 4:19I've got the ability to bring others 4:22into my ecosystem so before I'd have to 4:25come up with the idea in my own company 4:26now I can come up with the idea in the 4:30large think about what we do with 4:31hackathons and how we get a lot of smart 4:34people together and they come up with 4:36new ideas so now I don't have to spend 4:38all of my own money on building up the 4:41infrastructure the infrastructure is out 4:42there in the cloud so I get access to 4:45great ideas I get access to resources I 4:48get access to data I get access to 4:50people and when you start to make access 4:52that easy and ubiquitous great ideas 4:55great inventions and things that can 4:58change the world will happen
