Apple's Fall Lineup Emphasizes Health Tech

Key Points

  • Apple’s fall announcements emphasize health technology over AI, positioning the company as a market leader in long‑term, revenue‑driving health solutions.
  • The new Apple Watch is branded as a “device for healthy life,” introducing sleep‑apnea detection while hinting at future features like a blood‑pressure monitor that require incremental technical breakthroughs.
  • Regulatory hurdles shape Apple’s rollout strategy, as seen with FDA clearance for AirPods to function as hearing aids, leading the company to phrase health claims very carefully.
  • By adding at‑home hearing tests and selective noise filtering, AirPods evolve from pure audio accessories into consumer‑grade hearing devices, potentially reaching millions who would not otherwise see an audiologist.

0:00so Apple released their fall lineup this 0:02is their every year this is what they do 0:04here's why it matters this year so 0:07number one apple is continuing to invest 0:10in health Tech I know that's not what 0:12most people are saying is number one 0:13most people are saying AI is number one 0:15but I'm here to tell you the healthtech 0:17I think matters more for them the 0:19healthtech is where they are a market 0:20leader it's where they are driving a lot 0:22of incremental Revenue long term over 0:24the next decade they're investing in two 0:27big areas in health Tech that they 0:28wanted to call out number one the Apple 0:31watch they're just straight up branding 0:33this as the device for healthy life on 0:36the website they're going after sleep 0:38apnea with this release where the device 0:40will check if you have sleep apnea it's 0:41a life-threatening condition and you can 0:45know that now and go after it now I know 0:47there's some stuff that they haven't 0:48been able to get to that they've wanted 0:50to uh a blood pressure monitor is one 0:52that comes to mind these are hard 0:54technical problems Apple tends to solve 0:56these problems incrementally and so when 0:59they have something that they can solve 1:00and release to the public that's safe 1:02like a sleep apne detector they'll go 1:04for it and they will wait until they're 1:08absolutely sure they have some of the 1:10other health features that are bigger 1:12flashier like the blood pressure monitor 1:14and eventually get to it and this is 1:17especially so because they're now in the 1:19health space and and that that's 1:21regulated differently they had to wait 1:23for FDA clearance for their earbuds 1:27before they could start to really talk 1:28about them as a hearing aid and so so I 1:30think Apple legal had like a lot of fun 1:32figuring out the exact positioning to 1:34sort of tell the public we have built a 1:36hearing aid without telling the public 1:38we have built a hearing 1:40aid that like they use that language but 1:42they use it very 1:44carefully so that brings me to the 1:46airpods which is now moving into the 1:47health device space as well because it 1:50is something that will give you a 1:51hearing test it will allow you to 1:53selectively hear which is actually a lot 1:55of what a hearing aid does so you can 1:57filter out certain noise like the little 1:58advertisement head you being able to 2:00filter out the baby crying or the dog 2:01yapping um which if you have a Corky 2:04it's nice to be able to filter out the 2:06noise of the Corky barking so that may 2:09be one I go 2:10for but the point is that the airpod is 2:13now not just a music listening device 2:16which is of course what Apple built 2:17their bread and butter on for so long it 2:19is also now a hearing device for people 2:23who have hearing loss and that is going 2:26to get millions of people who would not 2:28walk into an ear doctor to test their 2:31ears an 2:32audiologist they're going to be able to 2:35have a audio test in the privacy of 2:37their home be able to improve their 2:40hearing and it's going to functionally 2:42change dinner tables like you are going 2:44to see conversations that used to take 2:46place just disappearing hey you know Dad 2:48I have to say this over and over again 2:51and then you raise your voice and like 2:53Dad thinks you're fighting Etc like 2:54those kinds of family interactions are 2:57going to be different if the airpod is 2:59widely adopted in a way that the hearing 3:02aid never has been so I'm really curious 3:04to watch that and I think that's one of 3:05those longer term bets that Apple's 3:06making uh particularly as their core 3:09Market in the US ages 3:11up so healthtech is a big space covered 3:14airpod covered Apple watch let's talk 3:16about iPhone this is where most people 3:18lead because this is obviously their 3:19anchor product I think that this is the 3:24first effectively required upgrade for 3:26the iPhone in the last few years like 3:29maybe in the last five and the reason 3:32for that is that a lot of the features 3:35that apple is unlocking that are really 3:37flashy are just not going to be possible 3:40on existing iPhone models if I hold up 3:42this iPhone model I can't get the cool 3:45stuff on it I can't get that visual 3:47intelligence search that Apple demoed 3:51where you can take a picture of the cafe 3:53and see what the cafe is right or take a 3:55picture of the dog and see where the dog 3:56breed 3:57is you you don't get that kind of cool 4:00experience you don't get that extra 4:01button that allows you to do visual 4:03search that they decided to debut which 4:05by the way Apple debuting a button is a 4:07big deal because they absolutely hate 4:08buttons uh and so they must have decided 4:10this was really important in user 4:11testing to go after 4:14it and the camera's coming along too and 4:17so one of the things that's interesting 4:18is like Apple has been known like the 4:19iPhone is basically a fancy camera that 4:21has a phone bolted onto it and Apple has 4:24been known for improving the camera but 4:26always being like a touch behind some of 4:29the cutting Edge phones from other 4:30device makers this whole move into 4:33visual visual search and also sort of 4:36moving up to 4K is something we have 4:38seen from other device makers if you've 4:41been watching Google has been out there 4:44with ads on visual search and visual uh 4:47basically artificial intelligence for 4:49your camera for the last few months they 4:52are doing NFL ads on Google Gemini 9 and 4:55how cool it is and how it's not just 4:56another phone Apple had to have that in 4:58mind when they were thinking about this 5:01they had to be thinking how do we start 5:03to capture Market imagination with this 5:06phone and they did it in typically Apple 5:08fashion emphasizing the unified quality 5:11of this phone where the hardware and the 5:13software blend seamlessly it can go back 5:15into your photos in in a really easy way 5:18so that you can go back and you can 5:20search in complex text and now you're 5:21using AI for text not just AI for images 5:24and you can describe that you want the 5:25dog climbing the stairs and you'll see 5:27pictures of your Corky climbing the 5:29stairs 5:31so where I'm going with this is that 5:34apple had to reposition the product to 5:36be a market leader this year and they 5:38had to do so in a way that drove an 5:40upgrade cycle because they need to 5:42continue to drive iPhone purchases to 5:44retain profitability and so for them 5:47limiting a lot of these features to iOS 5:4918 and making it very clear that you 5:51need the special chip and you need the 5:52special hardware and there's certain 5:54things you're not going to get if you do 5:55not get this iPhone should drive a 5:58significant upgrade C ccle people are 6:00going to want to buy the new iPhone and 6:03yes I know some of you out there are 6:05like well why would they do that when 6:06the Google Gemini is right there and it 6:08has a lot of these visual search 6:09capabilities 6:11Etc apple has a brand that's really the 6:14answer like apple has a brand people are 6:16sort of connected to the Apple they have 6:18a Mac like that's that's why and so 6:21they're giving people who are loyal to 6:23the brand a strong reason to 6:26respond all right last but not least I 6:28want to call out that the llm stuff is 6:30going to be really interesting it will 6:32probably lead to the single greatest use 6:33of L llms that we've seen because tens 6:37of millions hundreds of millions of 6:39people who have previously not been 6:41going to chat GPT will have that 6:43functionality effectively on their phone 6:46but because Apple has been locking it 6:48off for privacy it is not going to feel 6:51like the smart chat GPT that some of us 6:53who are using the 40 model or Claude 6:55Sonet are used to it is I think it's 6:58going to feel Dumber 7:01and I am really curious to see how that 7:04actually works in practice with 7:05summaries with compose and how that 7:07affects usage it feels like a lot of 7:09people are going to try it and I'm 7:11really curious to see if people use it 7:12or if kind of like Siri and Alexa it 7:14falls by the wayside because it's just 7:16not smart enough to be useful and that 7:18could deal a blow to the perception of 7:20AI because this is something that a lot 7:22of people are going to be using because 7:24it's built into their device versus 7:26having to remember to go to a website 7:27like chat GPT so that's my big takeaway 7:30Apple's moving into healthtech I still 7:32think that's the biggest number one 7:33story I think number two is driving a 7:36monster upgrade cycle with the iPhone 7:38and I think number three is talking 7:39about the AI sort of space and where 7:41apple is going and how Apple's being 7:43very cautious in fact arguably they did 7:44more in the visual Apple intelligence 7:46side than on the llm side but it's still 7:49going to lead to a lot of usage and I'm 7:50really curious to see how that uh 7:52unfolds just because they have such a 7:54monster device footprint so we will see 7:57stay tuned that's my takeown of Apple's 7:58strategy behind this this year's release
