AI Model Stalemate, Cloud Giants Adopt Nuclear

Key Points

  • OpenAI’s rumored 4.5‑model release was shelved, likely because Anthropic and Google are holding back their own upgrades, creating a “who jumps first” game‑theory stalemate that may only break when market pressure forces a next‑gen launch.
  • According to current rumors, OpenAI is now planning to skip any interim release and wait for a full 5‑generation (or 5.5) model before unveiling anything new.
  • Microsoft, Amazon, and Google have each signed multi‑hundred‑million‑dollar deals for small modular nuclear reactors, signalling that the growing energy appetite of AI‑focused data centers will soon be met by onsite nuclear power.
  • The push for nuclear is driven by the massive power draw of Nvidia’s new Blackwell GPU architecture, which is already sold out through 2025 and powers the inference and training of the latest large language models.

0:00we're going to go through five news 0:02items from the week that you might have 0:03missed and the first one you definitely 0:05missed because it didn't happen and 0:08that's interesting that is news that it 0:09did not happen the 4.50 model for open 0:14AI did not drop and there was a lot of 0:16rumor that it would drop this week and 0:17the reason why it didn't is probably 0:20because anthropic did not drop their 0:22model and so what we have right now is a 0:24situation where anthropic and Google and 0:26open AI all probably have better models 0:30lying on the Shelf metaphorically 0:33speaking but none of them want to 0:36release them for fear of losing the pr 0:38Buzz that comes from a model release 0:41that's immediately followed by another 0:44company releasing their model and then 0:46claiming it's 0:47great so everyone's sitting there like 0:50what do we do right everyone's waiting 0:52for the other person to drop the model 0:54right now I don't know how that's going 0:56to get resolved that's up to open Ai and 0:58Google and anthropic we will see I would 1:02expect that eventually the market 1:04pressure is going to be high enough that 1:05a model will drop the current rumor as 1:08of this week is that open AI has gone 1:10back to looking at just waiting until 1:12the fifth generation or 550 model comes 1:14out and they're not going to release a 1:16halfway 1:17model I don't know like the the 1:20definition of halfway releases is weird 1:22in llms anyway because how do you 1:24measure the performance of something 1:26that's a halfway through a generation 1:28you haven't released yet I don't know so 1:31the point is they didn't release it they 1:32didn't release it because of interesting 1:34game theory reasons where everyone 1:35staring at everyone else waiting for 1:37someone else to go first H and we will 1:38just have to see how that resolves who 1:40will jump in the water first with the 1:41Next Generation model we shall 1:44see number two did happen Google and 1:49Microsoft and Amazon are now all in the 1:52nuclear power game so we heard about 1:54Microsoft earlier Amazon Inked a 500 1:57something million deal for nuclear this 1:59week Google Inked a deal for a lot of 2:02power but they would not name a figure 2:03which probably means it was also a lot 2:05of money bottom line the big players in 2:10Cloud are seeing that their energy 2:12demands are about to get so high that 2:16they have to have nuclear to handle 2:19them and they need small reactors that 2:21are close to the data centers to provide 2:24continuous power which means that future 2:26data centers are not just going to be 2:28data centers they're going to have like 2:30a small modular nuclear reactor running 2:33the data center right 2:34there and you might wonder well why is 2:37that right like why do they need that 2:39much more power well it's because the 2:41new Chips need more power to run if you 2:45install nvidia's new blackw chip 2:47architecture which is what's shipping 2:49right now which is what's booked out for 2:51the rest of 2025 like the whole year 2:53they've sold out of 2:55Blackwell that's what is running all of 2:58the model inference for these new next 2:59gener generation training uh runs for 3:01these new models that you know anthropic 3:03and open Ai and Google are trying to 3:06build well that has 208 billion 3:09transistors per chip as opposed to the 3:13mo the chips that were used to train 3:15current chat GPT models they they came 3:18in at you know only 80 billion uh so 3:21this is a lot it's it's a much smarter 3:22chip right it also sucks more power and 3:26so blackw chips if you put them in a 3:28server rack for a data center are going 3:31to be coming in at 60 to 120 KW per rack 3:37and most data centers just don't have 3:39the power configuration to handle that 3:41they top out 3:43at like less than 50 kilowatts per rack 3:48and if that's the case it's going to be 3:50hard like you have to this explains the 3:52data center revamp you have to 3:53essentially revamp your data center to 3:55handle the newest generation chips to 3:58build the nice models 4:00and so that is why when you look at 4:04office construction figures in the US 4:05they're doing very well because it turns 4:07out that for reasons I don't fully 4:09understand data centers are C 4:11categorized as a kind of office in most 4:14US economic reports and so the reason 4:17why we have been building new offices is 4:20because we've been building new data 4:21centers and we've been building new data 4:23centers to handle the power 4:25consumption so this brings us to one of 4:27the more surprising pieces of news for 4:28the week 4:30um 4:32asml flopped and when I say that asml is 4:36the Dutch company that builds the 4:39fabrication machines that make the chips 4:42that run our world they build them for 4:46the runs that make these blackw chips 4:49for NVIDIA but they build them for 4:50everybody else too the stock flopped and 4:54they lost something like $75 billion in 4:57market capitalization this week and 4:59scared everybody because they came in 5:02about5 billion lower on their sales 5:05guidance for 2025 than everyone had 5:08expected and their bookings which are 5:10like the future orders for chips right 5:12they came in at half what people 5:14expected now they have a big backlog 5:16like they're working through like a 30 5:17some billion dollar backlog for their 5:19bookings but the fact that bookings came 5:22in at like two and a half billion 5:23instead of five scared the markets 5:27briefly everybody who had exposure to AI 5:31in their company portfolio took a bath 5:34on the stock market like everybody got 5:36scared it's since evened out and I'll 5:39explain why so asml essentially said 5:42this is not about 5:44AI this is about the fact that certain 5:47fabrication forges so certain places 5:50where you make chips are delayed now 5:52there's one that's really delayed that 5:54is relevant to the forecast and it's the 5:56Intel Forge in Germany that got pushed 5:59back 6:00and it got pushed back because Intel has 6:02been having real trouble making chips 6:04they are falling behind in the chip race 6:06and it is impacting their ability to 6:08make Capital Investments that in turn 6:10hits 6:11asml the other reason is that asml has 6:16been selling fabrication units to China 6:21and there is speculation that export 6:24controls are going to go on that will 6:26limit their ability to do that going 6:27forward and so that is part of why they 6:30slashed their guidance they said they 6:32expect China Revenue to drop down to 6:34about 20% of their total revenue versus 6:3650% uh in the past year or 6:39so okay if if if that all felt like a 6:42snooze to you the 6:44tldr is that the the company that makes 6:48the machines that make the chips that 6:50run our world came in at lower than 6:53expected Revenue guidance which matters 6:55because everyone has been expecting 6:57these chip guys to do really really well 6:59if all needing all of these chips to run 7:01Ai and basically what asml said is it's 7:03not about Ai and then we heard just 7:06today from tsmc yes I know these guys 7:09all have acronyms tsmc is the Taiwanese 7:12company that is the most advanced chip 7:15manufacture in the world and so the most 7:17advanced chip architectures like 7:19Blackwell which we just talked about 7:21come from Taiwan and 7:24tsmc has said that they have got so many 7:29orders is they can barely keep up with 7:30demand they've said that they have a 7:31healthy 5-year Outlook 54% rise in 7:35quarterly profit they beat 7:37expectations these guys who are actually 7:39building the AI chips are doing fine in 7:42fact they're the most valuable company 7:43listed in Asia right now and so when you 7:46look at it that way the story to me 7:50looks very much like AI is doing fine 7:53until delayed fabrication unit asml 7:56needs to adjust 7:57expectations there you go that's the 7:59news for the week oh one more notebook 8:01LM dropped their actual product and you 8:03can pass a note to the podcasters which 8:05I will be doing check out notebook LM if 8:07you haven't all right cheers
