AI IPO Milestone and Claude's New Protocol

Key Points

  • Pony AI’s IPO, framed as an “AI” company, raised roughly $266 million at a valuation near $4.6 billion, highlighting how AI branding is becoming a marketable signal for investors even when the underlying tech (autonomous driving) predates the current AI hype.
  • The successful listing, despite typical IPO volatility, signals growing investor appetite for exit opportunities in AI‑related firms and underscores the importance of a credible AI narrative for public offerings.
  • Anthropic introduced the “model‑context protocol” (mCP) for Claude, proposing a unified standard that lets large language models reliably connect to external data sources, business tools, and development environments.
  • By enabling Claude to browse the web and integrate with other tools, the protocol aims to greatly amplify LLM capabilities, though current context windows remain limited and the feature is still in early rollout.

0:00three pieces of AI news today I'm going 0:01to start with the IPO one first so we 0:04have not had a ton of AI IPOs in 2024 I 0:09suspect we'll have some more that are at 0:11least framed as AI IPOs in 0:142025 this one uh Pony AI is sort of 0:19typical of the way AI is starting to get 0:22into our discourse it's Being Framed as 0:25artificial intelligence but if you look 0:27under the covers autonomous driving has 0:30been using AI for a lot longer than cat 0:32GPT has been around it's just that AI is 0:35now the flavor of the month for 0:37investors and so it becomes really 0:39relevant to frame an initial public 0:42offering as being around AI if you're 0:44looking to earn the trust of investors 0:47and go public that's what Pony AI has 0:49done they raised about 0:51$266 million do at I think it was 0:54something like a $2.6 billion uh 0:57valuation when they went live uh no 2.6 1:01maybe it was 4.6 anyway it's a decent 1:04Siz valuation it's in the billions the 1:06point is not exactly how many billion 1:08dollars it's that we actually have an AI 1:11startup at all even one that was framed 1:13as Ai and it got a successful IPO 1:17trading at the high end of the uh bid 1:20range and it seems to be holding up okay 1:23in trading of course we've all been 1:25there with IPOs we know that these IPO 1:28ranges are picked so that they do good 1:30pop and they do well the first couple 1:31days granted all of that it's still a 1:34big deal to get an exit at all because 1:36it means that investers are going to get 1:39some of their money back and the 1:41symbolism of this IPO is really that 1:43there is something of an AI appetite in 1:47the market for companies that want to 1:50exit and that is what I care about like 1:53I said like I I actually don't 1:55particularly care exactly where Pony AI 1:58ended up I'm not an investor this is on 2:00an investment 2:02podcast um all I care about is that this 2:06is a case where you actually have an 2:09opportunity to exit as an investor and 2:11that's good for the industry overall and 2:13actually as I look it up it's like a 4.6 2:15billion dollar valuation and it's been 2:17somewhat volatile after hours so there 2:19you go as you speak things occur um this 2:23is why I don't do stock trading advice 2:26second piece of news we're going to move 2:27on from the IPO thing this is about 2:29Claude Claude launched uh what they're 2:32calling mCP model context protocol the 2:36basic idea is that there needs to be a 2:38standard for connecting AI systems AI 2:41assistants to the systems where data 2:43lives like content business tools 2:46development environments all of that and 2:48it's not been really clear how we do 2:52that or what a consistent standard looks 2:54like and so model context protocol is an 2:56attempt to do that I'll link to that in 2:58the description it allows Claude to do 3:01things like build a browser to go browse 3:04the internet right like it can do things 3:06that enable Claude to build and use 3:09tools and that becomes a really powerful 3:13multiplier for a large language models 3:16capabilities Claude also I mean Claude 3:18has been shipping uh their context 3:20Windows may be short I know they always 3:22have limited availability but they've 3:23been shipping the second thing they Shi 3:25this is the third piece of news for 3:27today is they shipped personal Styles 3:30which means that when I click on the 3:31little quill pen in Claude I can create 3:34or edit my own style I can upload a 3:36sample of my writing and then Claude 3:38will actually mimic my writing of course 3:40I played with it of course I tried it I 3:42will link an artifact I built in Claude 3:45that is Claude explaining how large 3:48language models work in my voice in my 3:50written style honestly it kind of nailed 3:53it like it did pretty well and I think 3:56it's going to enable stronger first 3:58drafts and less of the like use of delve 4:01the use of personal lists the things 4:04that make AI writing somewhat 4:05predictable and annoying so we will see 4:08but I'm excited I think that we'll get 4:11higher quality outputs quicker without 4:14so much custom prompting like I've had 4:16to use a lot of custom prompting to get 4:19the kind of writing I want out of cloud 4:21in the past and I don't know if I'll 4:22have to do that anymore if I can just 4:24upload a sample and get a good personal 4:25style that's great good enough for me so 4:28there you go three pieces of news we had 4:30Pony AI cracking open the IPO window 4:33just a little bit um and we had the 4:36model context protocol which I think 4:39people are sleeping on like that is a 4:40huge development and we're just barely 4:42scratching the surface of what it can do 4:43it's like giving Claude tool use it's a 4:45massive massive development uh and then 4:47personal styles for clad as well so 4:49there you go that's the news
